Taking a Spirometry Test

You have been invited to come for a spirometry test. This is a simple text which helps us make an accurate diagnosis of what may be causing problems with your breathing. It can identify early stages of damage and it is invaluable in making sure that if you are receiving treatment, it is most appropriate for you.

It is important that you are free from infection when the test is performed and that you have been well for at least four weeks.

You will be asked to take a big breath, then blow out inot a mouthpiece as hard and as fast as you can, for as long as you can.  The force with which you blow out will be recorded by the machine.

  • Try not to use your reliever inhaler (blue or grey) for at least 4 hours before the test.
  • If you are using a long acting inhaler (green) e.g Serevent, Oxis, do not use for 12 hrs before the test - Seretide (purple inhaler) or Symbicort (red base) contain these drugs.
  • If you are taking Spiriva do not use for 24 hours before the test
  • If you are taking Aminophylline, Sio-phyllin, Theophylline or Uniphyllin, please do not take for 24 hours before the test.
  • Avoid vigerous exercise for 30 minutes prior to the test. It helps to wear loose clothing so your breathing is not restricted.
  • Try not to smoke for at least 6 hours.
